VETERAN WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT FOR REGENERATIVE LAND MANAGEMENT
Boots to Roots is a veteran workforce development program operated in collaboration with The Ag Land Trust to train
transitioning service members and veterans as regenerative land managers. Supported by a three-year, $2.5 million grant, the
program combines immersive training with active land regeneration, addressing agriculture’s labor shortages, barriers to entry,
and shrinking pipeline of new producers while building a sustained workforce prepared to serve on Department of War
installations and private ranches.
Participants complete a 12-month Master Grazier Fellowship
that combines classroom instruction, housing support,
leadership development, and full-time field immersion.
Veterans gain direct experience managing grazing systems,
deploying infrastructure, and monitoring ecological
performance to improve soil health, water function,
biodiversity, and wildfire resilience.
The program has capacity to train up to ten full-time Fellows
annually and engages additional transitioning service
members, preparing more than thirty veterans to actively
support regenerative grazing implementation across an
adjacent 200,000-acre military landscape. While in the
program, participants contribute to planning, monitoring, and
field operations at landscape scale.
Philanthropic investment enables full-spectrum workforce
training and regenerative land expansion at scale.
$500 – Provides uniform, gear, and protective
equipment for one veteran entering into the program.
$12,000 – Covers housing and lodging support for one
veteran participant for one year.
$20,000 – Provides essential equipment, supplies, and
infrastructure to expand veteran programming capacity.
$65,000 – Supports one Master Grazier Fellow with
training, mentorship, housing, and hands-on workforce
development for one year.
$350,000 – Sustains a significant portion of annual
workforce development and field operations.
Boots to Roots and Ag Land Trust are registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations. All contributions are fully tax-deductible
and directly support veteran training, housing, mentorship, and regenerative land implementation.
